Copper Box Arena
London, United Kingdom
Formerly: Handball Arena
The project was known as the Handball Arena, built for the 2012 Games with a £44 million budget and completed in the spring of 2011.
The exterior looks like a large copper box, but the inside is a different matter entirely. The retractable seating system means the room can adjust its size depending on who is playing. If you are watching the London Lions men's basketball team, the capacity sits at 6,000; if you are at a concert or a major event, the number goes up to 7,500. The venue is owned by the London Legacy Development Corporation and operated by Greenwich Leisure Limited. This arrangement has worked well enough to keep the London Lions men's and women's basketball teams, the London GD Handball Club, and the London Pulse netball team all under one roof.
There is an odd atmosphere inside the Copper Box Arena. The London Royal Ravens esports team played here until 2023, and the 2015 Netball Superleague Grand Final was held here. The arena is still standing, and the games are still being played.
