Paul Horn-Arena

Tübingen, Germany

Formerly: TüArena, Europahalle

Paul Horn-Arena is a compact hall in Tübingen. It stands at Europastraße 50, and the city itself built it as a way to keep sport inside when the weather turns. The arena opened with two names, TüArena and Europahalle, before the tool company Paul Horn took its own, and the space has always been small enough that the glass ceiling feels like a lid rather than a roof. The capacity is 3,132, a figure that holds more weight when the floor floods. In 2021 a severe storm drove water through the roof while the hall was serving as a vaccination centre; the parquet, the changing rooms, and the technical installations all had to be ripped out and replaced. The rebuild cost 800,000 euros and it changed the rhythm of the concerts and matches that follow. The history between them adds an edge when the Tigers return from injury and the crowd is tighter than usual. The floor is indoor sports parquet, something that shows when you watch a basketball game and notice the way the ball bounces on the second half of the season. The Walter Tigers Tübingen used to play here before moving to the Porsche-Arena, and now they are back for a short spell, which means the fans come from the city centre rather than driving in from the outskirts. Handball and volleyball teams have also used the space, but the hall is best known for the way it hides its size. The seating rises quickly and the stands press in, one mistake ends it when the shot goes off-target and rebounds back into the crowd. The city gave the arena a prize in 2005 for its urban design, a fact that sits quietly beside the more obvious improvements made after the flood. The name Paul Horn-Arena appears on the exterior in plain lettering, and the address is easy to find. The space is not big enough to host a boxing match without exceeding its normal capacity, though Björn Blaschke and Ben Nsafoah drew 3,500 people to one night in 2011. That night the hall felt full in a way it rarely does, and the captain dragged them through it when the players ran out of energy in the final quarter. The hall does not try to be anything other than a practical place to watch sport, and that is what makes it work.
