Skuruhallen
Skuru, Sweden
Skuruhallen does not parade its history on a plaque. It opened in 2010, a development project by Murman Arkitekter that finished on schedule. The building occupies 2,000 square metres, housing a court that measures 40 by 20 metres. There is a cafeteria tucked away and changing rooms for the athletes who use the space. The stands hold 150 spectators, a number that matches the capacity listed on the Skuru IK Handboll website.
The hall is not a grand arena. It is a working space for two very different sports. Skuru IK Handboll, a club founded in 1950, plays here, though their primary home is Nacka Bollhall. The women’s team competes in the Handbollsligan, the highest division, and claims four Swedish championships between 2001 and 2021. The men’s side plays in Division 1. Youth teams also fill the court during the week.
But the hall is equally defined by the mats it lays down. It hosts the Nordic Open BJJ Championships, an annual event organized by Nacka Dojo. The tournament has run since 2012 and is one of Europe’s largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions. The hall also sees the Skurucupen handball tournament in early September.
There are no attendance records for championship matches here, as finals are usually played in larger venues like Kinnarps Arena. The facility does not advertise a playing surface type for football, as the club’s football section may no longer be active. The club itself has approximately 1,250 members and 41 competitive teams. The address is Skuruskolväg 2 in Nacka. It does not demand attention; it simply hosts the matches that need a roof.
