Sporthalle Aue
Baden, Switzerland
The wooden arches still hold the roof over Sporthalle Aue, a hall where the air has always been varnished. Built in 1925, the place has survived the decades. When the City of Baden looked at the building in April 2020, the option to knock it down and build three new halls was thrown out. They kept the wooden stands and fixed the systems instead.
The hall sits at Kanalstrasse 9, tucked into the Sportanlage Aue complex. Most of the time it belongs to the handball team HSG Baden-Endingen, who bring their Nationalliga B matches here. The women’s side, HSG Aargau Ost, turns up for a few games too, though they split their season between here and the GoEasy in Siggenthal-Station. FC Baden 1897 does not play their league football within these walls, but they drag their kids in during the winter months for tournaments and training, when November has settled in and the pitch is closed.
Rows of seats face the court, and the capacity sits at 800. The management rests with the city’s infrastructure department, run through Melvin Andermatt. The energy bill dropped when Oxoia wired an intelligent system into the heating, cutting the consumption and the CO2 output. The exact dates of the work are unclear, but the savings are real.
