Vasalundshallen
Solna, Sweden
Formerly: Idrottens Hus
Vasalundshallen sits at Badhusplanen 1-3 in Solna, a building that remembers water. It opened its doors in 1957 as an idrottshall and a swimming pool, designed by Nils Tesch. For decades the city swam here, but that life ended when a new hall opened elsewhere. The pool drained, and the building began a slow transformation into a sports house for dry land.
The structure now holds 500 spectators, but one that brings the crowd close to the action. AIK Basket’s youth team calls it home for training and matches, while the volleyball club Klubben Harem plays its league games within these walls. Floorball and handball also claim space on the main floor and in the smaller eastern and western halls that sit above it.
Renovation work has been underway since 2022, following the closure of the original pool. The project, which started under the name Idrottens Hus before reverting to Vasalundshallen, is estimated to cost 212 million SEK. It aims to reshape the empty basin into a full sports facility. Completion is expected in the autumn of 2026. During this period, the main hall will close for maintenance in May 2025, with a pause allowing clubs access from October through April.
Some artistic decorations from the old swimming days will survive the build. The building remains owned by Solna Municipality. It is not an ice hockey venue; Solna HC plays at Solna Ishall. What remains here is a space caught between two eras, waiting for the new floors to settle.
