Vertu Motors Arena

It sits on Scotswood Road. The building opened its doors in January 2019, a date etched into the records of local sport. The construction began in November 2017, a period of noise and disruption that ended with a sleek, functional interior. The principal contractor, Esh Construction Services, ensured the structure was solid, while Gemini MS LTD handled the intricate mechanical and plumbing works that keep the venue running smoothly.

What makes this arena distinct is its versatility. It is not a single-purpose shrine to one sport but a multi-purpose indoor arena designed to adapt. The hardwood surface for basketball is just one configuration; the space can be reconfigured for boxing or entertainment shows, shifting its capacity from 2,800 for a tight basketball game to 3,500 for a boxing match. This flexibility has allowed it to host FIBA international basketball qualifiers for Great Britain, bringing matches against Germany and Greece to a local audience. It has also seen the MF & DAZN X Series, proving it can handle events beyond the court.

The naming rights tell another chapter. In March 2021, the venue was renamed from the Eagles Community Arena after Vertu Motors acquired the rights in a five-year deal. This shift in identity reflects the commercial realities of modern sport, where sponsorship is key to survival. The project itself was a partnership involving the Newcastle Eagles, led by owner Paul Blake, alongside Newcastle City Council and Sport England, showing that the arena is as much a civic asset as it is a sports venue. Today, it stands as a testament to the resilience of local sport, providing a stage for players and fans alike without the pretence of being anything other than what it is: a functional, vital part of Newcastle's sporting infrastructure.
