Newcastle Eagles Women play in the Women's Super League Basketball, the competition they have known as the WBBL for most of their existence, and their recent history is one of getting close without getting there: a WBBL Playoffs final in 2021 and a WBBL Cup final in 2022, both lost to London Lions.
The franchise took shape in the 2018-19 season, when the Newcastle Eagles absorbed the Team Northumbria women's side rather than building a roster from nothing. Team Northumbria had existed since 2000 and won the WNBL Division Two Playoffs in 2005, and it was their captain, Giulia Simioni, who carried that squad across into the new Eagles set-up and led it in its first season under the new name.
Home games are played at the Vertu Motors Arena on Scotswood Road, in front of a basketball capacity of 2,800. The closest fixture on the calendar is against Durham Palatinates, played as the North East derby.
American imports have driven the team's better runs in most seasons since 2018, Tierra Hodges among them; she was named WBBL Player of the Month for December 2023. But the figure most tied to the club's identity is Chloe Gaynor, who took the head coach's job and stepped onto the court herself, and won the League's Women's Coach of the Year award in her first season in charge.
