Before St Albans had a women's team, it had a college programme. In 2009 Oaklands College set up a basketball academy, and the academy has stayed the foundation. It is an accredited Basketball England Pathway Programme, and it is described as a nationally recognised player development centre.

The women's side came seven years later. Oaklands Wolves Women, also known as St Albans Wolves, joined the Women's British Basketball League (WBBL) in 2016 and finished 10th in that first season. The academy came first and the league team second. Several players associated with the club have since been called up to the Great Britain women's national team.

The best result so far came in January 2025, in the final of the SLB Trophy. The Wolves played at Birmingham's Utilita Arena, well away from the 600-seat Sports Zone, the college hall where they play their home games. They lost 59-61 to Caledonia Gladiators.

That final was played nine years after the club's first league season. The black and red of the Wolfpack are still worn at the college on East Drive where the academy began.
