About

The Betty Codona Trophy is the premier national cup competition for the top-tier women's professional basketball league in Great Britain. It is currently organized under the banner of Super League Basketball (SLB), having previously been known as the WBBL Trophy when the league operated as the Women's British Basketball League (WBBL). The competition was founded in 2014, coinciding with the establishment of the professional WBBL structure.

It is named in honor of Betty Codona OBE (1938–2022), the founder of the City of Sheffield Hatters and a pioneering figure in English women's basketball, often referred to as the "first lady of English basketball." The trophy was officially renamed from the "WBBL Trophy" to the "Betty Codona Trophy" following her death in March 2022, with the 2022–23 season being the first to feature the name exclusively in official standings.

In terms of the pyramid, the competition involves clubs from the top tier of women's basketball in Great Britain. While the league structure has undergone rebranding (from WBBL to SLB), the Betty Codona Trophy remains the cup competition for this elite division. It is distinct from the league championship itself; teams compete in a regular season to determine seeding, and the trophy is decided through a knockout format. The competition typically features a group stage or pool play followed by knockout rounds, including Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and a Final.

The Final is a significant event, often held at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham and broadcast on Sky Sports. A key distinction of the Betty Codona Trophy compared to other competitions is its specific focus on the top-tier professional women's league, separate from the men's BBL trophies or lower-tier women's cups. Unlike the league title, which is determined by regular season performance and playoffs, the Trophy is a standalone knockout competition. There is no promotion or relegation associated with the cup itself, as it is an invitational competition for league members. The format has evolved over time, sometimes involving a "first round" for lower-seeded teams or all teams depending on the number of participants, but consistently culminates in a high-profile final.
