Grenoble's ice hockey club traces back to 1963, when the Grenoble Hockey Club took shape — Ours dauphinois for a few years in the late 1960s, then Club des Sports de Glace de Grenoble from 1972. The Palais des Sports, raised for the 1968 Winter Olympics, gave the club its first real home before the Patinoire Pôle Sud took over in 2001. The Brûleurs de Loups name itself dates to 1969, coined by the journalist Albert Fontaine, though the club did not formally adopt it until 1991.
That switch coincided with the start of a run that has made Grenoble one of the dominant forces in French hockey. The Ligue Magnus title has come back to the Patinoire Pôle Sud nine times, most recently in 2025.
The club has also sent players beyond French hockey: Cristobal Huet built the early part of his goaltending career there before reaching the NHL, and Alexandre Texier followed a similar path out of Grenoble. Sacha Treille now wears the captain's armband once held by his father, Philippe Treille.
