That total sits against a late start: the federation joined the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) on 23 March 1912, but the national side did not play until 21 March 1992. Its first match, in Johannesburg, ended in a 23–0 defeat by South Africa.

The two have played 12 times as of 2026. Many of its players come through Tornado Luxembourg, a club that plays in the French league system.

In 2017 it finally went the other way. Luxembourg won Division III, beating Bulgaria 10–4 in the final, and earned promotion.

Luxembourg was relegated in 2018 and has since played in Division III, where it finished third again in 2024. The team plays its home games at the Patinoire de Kockelscheuer in Luxembourg City. The 2017 title remains its only World Championship gold, and no Division II place has been held since it was lost.
