Pat Brown Beats Hedges to Win British and Commonwealth Titles
Unbeaten Olympian Pat Brown stopped John Hedges in the sixth round at Co-op Live to claim the vacant British and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles.
Pat Brown stopped John Hedges in the sixth round at Co-op Live on Saturday night to win the vacant British and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles, and dedicated the finishing body shot to Ricky Hatton.
The 26-year-old Olympian moved to seven wins from seven as a professional, every one of them inside the distance, and added the Lonsdale Belt to the WBA International and IBF Intercontinental titles he already held.
It was not straightforward. Hedges, 6ft 6in and a southpaw, made himself hard to hit through the opening rounds and grabbed hold whenever Brown worked his way inside. Brown grew frustrated and began leaning on Hedges with his head, forcing him back over the top rope until referee Reece Carter stepped in.
The fight turned in the fifth. Brown stopped hunting for the one shot, put his jab to work and landed a right uppercut flush under the chin. Having aimed high for five rounds, he then switched his attack to the ribs and closed the fight in round six.
For Hedges, unbeaten through his first 12 fights, the defeat came on his 13th outing.
The same card produced a second talking point out of San Diego, where Isaac Cruz retained his WBC interim super-lightweight title on Sunday and called out Ryan Garcia afterwards.
