About the player
Aljoša Matko was the top scorer in the Slovenian PrvaLiga in 2023–24, with 18 goals, and Celje won the league title that season. He was named in the PrvaLiga Team of the Season. He was also the league's Player of the Month in August 2023.
Matko came through the youth systems of Bela Krajina and Krka before moving to Maribor, where he stayed from 2015 and made his senior debut in 2019. His early progress was recognised quickly: in 2020 he was named Slovenian Youth Footballer of the Year and Maribor's Player of the Year.
In August 2021 he moved to Sweden, signing a three-year contract with Hammarby. The stay did not last. In 2022 he was loaned to Olimpija Ljubljana, and on 15 August that year he joined Celje on a free transfer.
After the league title came the Slovenian Cup in 2025, and in April of that year he collected a second Player of the Month award.
In June 2025 he made his debut for the Slovenia national team in a friendly against Luxembourg, which Slovenia won 1–0. He has won five caps and has not yet scored for the national side.
In July 2025 Újpest paid €500,000 to take him to Hungary. There he carried on scoring and finished the 2025–26 season as the top scorer of the Nemzeti Bajnokság I.
