About the player
Gilson Benchimol Tavares grew up in the Portuguese youth system despite being born in Praia, moving through Damaiense, CR Foot, Linda-a-Velha and Real Massamá before a second spell at Damaiense and, in 2020, a move into Estoril Praia's academy. He made his senior debut for Estoril in July 2021, making 12 league appearances without scoring. The loan at Benfica B across the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons was productive, where he scored eight goals in 31 league games.
Tavares made his international debut in October 2020, in a friendly against Guinea, with six goals in 23 caps. He scored a hat-trick in a 6-0 friendly win over Liechtenstein in March 2022. He has also found the net: a goal against Togo during qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and another against Egypt once the tournament itself got under way in January 2024.
