About the player
Fabio Gruber grew up in Augsburg and joined the FC Augsburg academy after leaving local side TSV Göggingen 1875. He spent two seasons with FC Augsburg II, making 62 appearances and scoring six goals in the Regionalliga Bayern before leaving on a free transfer to SC Verl in 2023, where he signed a contract running to 2026.
His performances at Verl earned him a move to 1. FC Nürnberg in February 2025, in a deal worth around €700,000. Gruber played for Nürnberg through the 2025–26 season before agreeing a switch to 1. FSV Mainz 05 for the summer of 2026, a transfer reported at more than €3 million and a four-year contract.
Although born and raised in Germany, Gruber holds Peruvian citizenship through his family background and opted to represent Peru at international level. He made his debut for the national team on 18 November 2025 in a friendly against Chile, a match Peru lost 2-1. Since then he has gone on to win further caps for his country.
Gruber is a defender at 188 cm. His career so far has followed a steady upward curve, from regional football with Augsburg's reserves through the third tier with Verl and Nürnberg to a Bundesliga move with Mainz.
