About the player
At 205cm, Florian Wiegele is the tallest player ever named in a World Cup finals squad. The Austrian goalkeeper's route to that squad ran through the lower rungs of the domestic game: after coming through Sturm Graz's youth ranks, he spent his early senior years at SV Lebring, then FC Gleisdorf 09, before a spell at DSV Leoben in the 2. Liga ended in relegation.
The move to Viktoria Plzeň in 2024 changed the shape of his career, though it came with an immediate detour — a season-long loan to Grazer AK in the Austrian Bundesliga, where he became first-choice goalkeeper and made 15 appearances before returning to Plzeň in the summer of 2025. With Plzeň he has since featured in the Europa League against opponents including FC Porto and SC Freiburg.
His international breakthrough came later than his club progress: a first cap for Austria arrived in a friendly win over Ghana, and he was subsequently named in the squad for the 2026 World Cup. Wiegele's game is built around the physical profile his height gives him, and he is regarded as a reliable presence between the posts.
