Vienna, 4 June 1954: Austria beat Switzerland 7–5 in a World Cup quarter-final that still stands as the highest-scoring match in the tournament's history, then went on to see off Uruguay for third place. The run capped a decade in which Austria had already reached a World Cup semi-final, in 1934, and an Olympic final in Berlin two years later, where they took silver. Behind those results stood the "Wunderteam" of the early 1930s, built under coach Hugo Meisl around Matthias Sindelar, a forward whose name is still the one attached to that team.

The team itself dates back further than the association that now runs it: its first international was played in Vienna in October 1902, a 5–0 win over Hungary, a year and a half before the Austrian Football Association was even founded. Hungary has remained the fixture that matters most, the two sides having met well over a hundred times since that first afternoon.

More recent history has been leaner by comparison. Two runs to the last 16 at the European Championship, in 2020 and 2024, both ended against sides that went on to knock them out narrowly — Italy, then the Netherlands. Marko Arnautović carries the current side's attacking weight, having overtaken Toni Polster as the national team's all-time leading scorer while also becoming its most-capped player. Ralf Rangnick has been in charge of building the squad since taking the job.

Home games are played in front of crowds of up to 50,865 at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, on the banks of the Danube in Vienna.
