About the player
Mwene left Mainz in 2021 for PSV Eindhoven, winning the KNVB Cup in 2021–22 and 2022–23 and the Johan Cruyff Shield in three straight years. He was named to the Eredivisie Team of the Month in December 2021. In August 2023 he returned to Mainz on a three-year contract.
His route to Mainz had already gone through Kaiserslautern, where he joined on a free transfer in 2016 after coming through VfB Stuttgart's youth ranks and playing for the club's reserve side in the 3. Liga.
Mwene made his debut for Austria on 4 September 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Israel and has since won 32 caps without scoring. A Nations League match against Germany in November 2023 produced one of the more talked-about moments of his international career, when an altercation with Leroy Sané left the German forward sent off.
Back at Mainz, Mwene has settled into a role further up the pitch than a traditional full-back's reputation might suggest: in the 2024–25 season he set up five goals in the Bundesliga, a tally that put him joint-third among defenders across Europe's top five leagues. He picked up an adductor injury in a match against Borussia Mönchengladbach in December 2025.
