Liverpool yet to open Alisson contract talks as Mamardashvili waits

Liverpool have not yet opened contract talks with Alisson, whose current deal runs to the end of the 2026-27 season.

The Athletic's James Pearce laid out the position on the Walk On podcast. "Will he still be here next season? We don't know that at the moment. From what I've been told, it's just too soon on all sides. There have been no talks yet," Pearce said.

Pearce is describing talks that have not started, not talks that have broken down. Nothing in his remarks suggests Alisson has turned down an offer or that Liverpool have decided to move on.

The clock matters, though. From January the Brazilian will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside England. Juventus have been linked with him, but nothing concrete has come of it.

Giorgi Mamardashvili complicates the picture. The Georgia goalkeeper joined in 2025 and is regarded as Alisson's potential successor. By Pearce's account, he will not want to spend a third consecutive season as the understudy, and would probably leave in 2027 if Alisson signs a new deal.

Georgia are third in their World Cup qualifying group in Europe with 3 points from 4 matches, so the national side offers no guarantee of regular football either.

If Liverpool extend Alisson, this may mean planning for a new number two, or a sale of Mamardashvili a year from now. If they let the deal run down, the January window is when the decision is likely to be forced.
