Fernandes, Gakpo and Dorgu hit by injuries on duty

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Liverpool's Cody Gakpo and United's Patrick Dorgu have all been added to the growing list of injury concerns from this international break.

Fernandes started Portugal's win over Wales on Thursday but was left out of the squad for Sunday's match against Norway. Portugal boss Jorge Jesus said before that game that his captain had "played through the pain" against Wales and "wasn't his usual self". "He played with an injury he brought from Manchester United," Jesus said. "He really wanted to play against Wales."

Gakpo went off after just 16 minutes of the Netherlands' 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday, holding the lower part of his right leg. The 26-year-old has started the season well for Liverpool, with two goals and four assists in six appearances across all competitions.

Dorgu lasted 30 minutes before limping off in Denmark's 2-0 win over Wales.

The first international break of the 2026-27 season has been extended by a week, with the traditional October break scrapped. Countries now play four matches instead of two across a three-week window spanning late September and early October, adding to the workload behind these injuries.

Liverpool's problems have mounted further: Alexander Isak withdrew from Sweden duty with a minor thigh injury after playing 90 minutes and scoring in a 2-1 win over Romania on Friday. He will miss Sweden's remaining three fixtures in this window.
