Germany Lose to Greece in Klopp's Nations League Debut Defeat

Germany had the better of the chances by volume. UEFA's numbers show 16 shots to Greece's six, five on target against one. Joshua Kimmich came closest with a free-kick on the 53rd minute that beat the crossbar by inches, tipped over by goalkeeper Tzolakis, who also denied Karim Adeyemi twice inside the opening half-hour.

Klopp made five changes from the goalless draw with the Netherlands four days earlier. Younes Ebnoutalib started up front on his full debut, and 23-year-old Bambasé Conté won his first cap in midfield. Conté spent last season on loan at SV Elversberg, seventh in the Bundesliga after four rounds this term.

Konstantinos Karetsas, Borussia Dortmund's 18-year-old forward, had also gone close early on, cutting inside and shooting just over after eight minutes.

In the group's other fixture, the Netherlands beat Serbia 2:1 away, with Mexx Meerdink scoring both goals — a 30th-minute penalty and a second on 69 minutes. Luka Jović replied for Serbia. Greece lead Group 2 of League A on six points, the Netherlands sit second on four, Germany have one and Serbia none.

This is the first loss of his tenure and follows a run at Liverpool that brought the league, both domestic cups, the Champions League and the club World Cup.
