The night Israel became champions of Asia came in Ramat Gan in 1964, a 1-0 win over South Korea in the final that remains the country's only major title. It had been building toward that for years, having finished runners-up at the same tournament in 1956 and 1960 before the breakthrough arrived, and following it four years later with a third-place finish in 1968.
The team's roots go back to 1928, when the Palestine Football Association was formed under British Mandate rule, and the national side took shape in 1934, entering World Cup qualification that same year. The only appearance at the tournament itself came in 1970, where Mordechai Spiegler scored the country's single World Cup goal in the group stage.
Eran Zahavi has finished as the side's all-time leading marksman with 35 goals, while Yossi Benayoun's 101 caps stand as the record for appearances. Politics has shaped the fixture list as much as football has: matches against Lebanon and other Arab nations, including Syria, Egypt and Iran, have carried a weight beyond three points, tied to decades of regional conflict rather than to any single rivalry.
Ramat Gan Stadium, holding just over 41,500, has long served as the team's main stage, though Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv and Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem now share the load of home fixtures. The players still take the field in white and sky blue.
