Moldova

The Moldovan Football Federation was set up on 14 April 1990, and the national side followed quickly: an unofficial match against Georgia on 2 July 1991, then UEFA membership in 1993 and FIFA membership in 1994. The first official international came on 16 April 1994, against the United States.

The team plays in blue, yellow and red, the colours of the flag, and takes its nickname, Tricolorii, from them. Home games are at the Zimbru Stadium in Chișinău, which holds 10,104.

Results that stand out are few and specific. In November 2007 Moldova beat Hungary 3–0 in Euro 2008 qualifying. In September 2013 they beat Montenegro 5–2 in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. The most recent came in June 2023, when they were 2–0 down to Poland in a Euro 2024 qualifier and won 3–2.

Two players carry the record books. Alexandru Epureanu made 100 appearances between 2006 and 2021, and Ion Nicolaescu scored 18 goals in 56 matches, the national record. Neither played at a major tournament.

The Nations League has kept Moldova in League D for most of its existence. They finished third in their group in 2018–19 and second in 2022–23. In between, promotion to League C for 2020–21 lasted one campaign: they lost a play-out to Kazakhstan and dropped back down. Romania is the opponent that matters most to supporters, given the shared language and history. Moldova has never qualified for a World Cup or a European Championship.
