Hristo Stoichkov spent the summer of 1994 carrying the national team to a World Cup semi-final. In the United States, under manager Dimitar Penev, Bulgaria finished second in its group behind Nigeria, beat Greece 4-0 and Argentina 2-0, then got past Mexico on penalties in the last sixteen. The quarter-final against the defending champions, West Germany, ended 2-1, with Stoichkov and Yordan Letchkov scoring; the run stopped in the semi-final against Italy, and a 0-4 defeat by Sweden closed the tournament in fourth place. Stoichkov finished as the World Cup's top scorer and was named the year's best player in the world.
Bulgaria's only other major honour is an Olympic silver from Mexico City in 1968, lost 1-4 to Hungary in the final, and the two European Championships it reached, in 1996 and 2004, ended in the group stage both times.
The team, known as the Lions and, in a nod to its flag, the Tricolours, has been run by the Bulgarian Football Union since 1922. It plays in white, green and red for the same reason, and has used the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia since 1950. Its oldest rivalries run through the Balkans, with matches against Romania, Serbia and Greece carrying weight beyond the points on offer.
Two men share the scoring record on 48 goals apiece: Hristo Bonev and Dimitar Berbatov.
