San Marino occupies the same shelf as Andorra in UEFA's qualifying groups: both nations have spent decades collecting more defeats than any table can comfortably display, and it is against them that Andorra measures what progress looks like. The 2021 World Cup qualifiers settled the question emphatically — 2–0 at home, then 3–0 away. Liechtenstein completes the rivalry at the lower end of European football, while fixtures against Spain draw attention for proximity rather than competitiveness.
The team itself is younger than its federation might suggest: the Andorran Football Federation formed in 1994 and the domestic league kicked off the following year, but the national side did not take the field until 13 November 1996, when it lost 6–1 to Estonia. Wins came slowly after that. The first competitive victory arrived eight years later, 1–0 against Macedonia in a 2006 World Cup qualifier, with Marc Bernaus scoring the only goal. It took until October 2019 for the first win in European Championship qualifying proper, 1–0 over Moldova, closing out a run of 56 matches without a victory in that competition.
Ildefons Lima carried the team through most of that history, 137 caps between 1997 and 2023 and still the side's all-time top scorer with 11 goals.
Home games are played at the Estadi Nacional in Andorra la Vella.
