About the player
Hayden Matthews captained Sydney FC in the AFC Champions League at 20. In December 2024 he led the side in a 3-1 win over Kaya FC-Iloilo, less than a year after signing his first professional contract with the club.
He came through the Sydney FC academy, playing for the under-21 side in the NPL NSW from 2017 to 2023. His A-League Men debut came against Newcastle Jets on 19 January 2024. He played 17 matches that season and made 12 appearances the next, including games in the Champions League. Sydney FC kept eight clean sheets in the 2024–25 A-League season before he left.
Portsmouth signed him in January 2025 for a reported £1.27 million, about $2.5 million AUD. That was a record fee for an A-League defender and the third-highest in the history of the A-League Men. His first match for the club was a 1-0 Championship defeat at Millwall on 28 January 2025. An ankle injury later kept him out for several weeks.
On 1 September 2026 Matthews moved to League One side Bradford City on a season-long loan. He kept the number 14 there and played in the EFL Cup and the EFL Trophy.
He was an unused substitute for the Socceroos in a World Cup qualifier against Bahrain in November 2024, and he has one senior cap.
