The EFL Championship occupies the second tier of English football, positioned immediately below the top flight. Its lineage begins with the establishment of the Football League in 1888, marking it as one of the oldest football competitions in the world. For over a century, it served as the premier division before the creation of the Premier League in 1992 shifted its status. Following that restructuring, it retained the name Football League First Division until 2004, when it adopted the title now known as the EFL Championship.
Each campaign involves 24 clubs competing in a double round-robin schedule spanning from August to May. The format requires every side to play 46 matches against their opponents. Victory yields three points, while a draw secures one. The objective is clear: reach the Premier League. The two highest-placed teams achieve automatic promotion. The remaining spot is contested through a high-stakes playoff series. Teams finishing between third and sixth place enter two-legged semi-finals, with the winners meeting in a single final at Wembley Stadium.
Relegation impacts the bottom three sides, sending them down to EFL League One. They are replaced by the top two from that division and the winner of the League One playoffs. Financially, the competition operates with a distinct structure. The EFL manages a central broadcasting agreement with Sky Sports. Clubs also receive solidarity payments from the Premier League and benefit from parachute payments if they are relegated. Unlike the lower divisions, there is no salary cap, although Profit and Sustainability Rules apply to regulate spending.
A significant change is scheduled for the 2026–27 season. Approved by member clubs, this reform will expand the promotion playoffs. The current four-team system will grow to include six sides. The process will introduce a one-legged eliminator round involving the teams placed fifth through eighth before the semi-finals begin. This adjustment aims to increase the number of clubs fighting for a place in the Premier League.
