Charlton

South-east London has never been short of noise about this club, but the sharpest of it comes from just across the river, where Millwall wait: a rivalry built less on trophies than on geography and temper, the kind of fixture that carries no love lost long after the final whistle. Woolwich Arsenal, before it moved north across the water, gave the area another old grudge that still gets an airing whenever the two names are drawn together.

Charlton Athletic itself began as a stitching-together of local youth sides, East Street Mission and Blundell Mission among them, formed in 1905 and never renamed since. The nickname, the Addicks, comes from the coarse cloth once worked and worn in the district, not from any player or mascot. The club has played home matches at The Valley, one of the older grounds still standing in English football, since its earliest years; 27,111 fits in now, all of it seated.

The one afternoon still spoken of before any other came at Wembley in 1947, when Charlton beat Burnley 1-0 in the FA Cup final, Chris Duffy scoring the goal that decided it. It was some repair job on the previous year's final, lost on the same stage. The man who built that side, Jimmy Seed, took the club up through the Third Division South and Second Division back to back in 1934-36 before delivering the Cup itself, and a stand at The Valley still carries his name. Alan Curbishley did the longer, quieter version of the same job decades later: fifteen years in charge, two promotions to the top flight, six seasons kept there.

Between those two spells, the club touched its ceiling in 1936/37, finishing second in the First Division, and returned to the top flight in 2000 after winning what is now the Championship. The last of the promotions on record came via League One in 2011/12, taken with a record 101 points. Charlton currently sit outside the second tier, working from League One back up, with the FA Cup story from 1947 still the one The Valley reaches for.
