The Clarets go into 2026 back in the Championship, relegated in 19th place last season after another single-season stay in the Premier League.

Burnley have been playing at Turf Moor since 1883, a year after the club was formed — and it began as a rugby side before switching codes within months.

The peak came in 1920/21. Burnley won the First Division and went 30 league matches without defeat. Claret and blue had been adopted in 1910, and the nickname followed from the shirt. A second title arrived in 1959/60. Key players left, and the club slid.

How far it slid is worth stating plainly. Relegation from the top flight came in 1976. By 1985 Burnley were in the Fourth Division for the first time, and in 1987 they finished a match away from dropping out of the Football League altogether. They stayed up, then won the Fourth Division that same decade and worked their way back through the tiers.

The return to the Premier League came in 2009, through a play-off final settled 1-0 against Sheffield United. In December 2020 the American investment firm ALK Capital bought 84% of the club for £170m.
