Turf Moor

The name came off the land before it came off any contract. Peat was cut here for fuel, and the moor gave the ground its name; when English clubs began selling the words above their gates, Turf Moor stayed as it was.

On 17 February 1883 Burnley played Ротенстолл in the first match on the ground and lost 6:3.

The approach road carries a name from later in the club's history. Гарри Поттс Уэй is named for Harry Potts, the longest-serving manager Burnley have had, so the address a supporter reads on a matchday ticket points back at the dugout rather than at a sponsor or a councillor.

Underfoot, the pitch is a Desso GrassMaster hybrid — natural grass stitched through with artificial fibres that hold the root structure together. It is the one part of the ground that belongs entirely to the modern era, a concession made because Lancashire winters and a pitch that has been played on since the 1880s do not otherwise agree with each other.

So the ground reads as two things at once: an address and a name inherited from the moor and from a manager, and a playing surface engineered to survive the weather that comes with them.
