No fixture on the calendar matters like the one against Liverpool. The two clubs share a single root: Everton played its earliest matches on public pitches around Stanley Park before settling on rented ground in Anfield in 1884. A dispute over rent with the landlord, John Houlding, drove the club out in 1892 — Houlding kept the ground and built a new club there, Liverpool, while Everton crossed the park to Goodison.
Everton spent 132 years at Goodison before the move, in 2025, to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock, a 52,769-seat ground on the Mersey waterfront. Goodison did not go quiet — it became home to the club's women's team.
What sits alongside the shirts is a run few English clubs can claim: Everton has spent more seasons in the top flight than any club except Arsenal.
The nine league titles are spread across generations, but the individual mark that still stands came in 1927/28, when Dixie Dean scored 60 league goals in a single season, a total that carried Everton to the championship and that no one in England has since matched. The 1980s belong to manager Howard Kendall, whose side won two league titles, an FA Cup and, in 1985, the European Cup Winners' Cup.
More recent seasons brought points deductions over breaches of financial sustainability rules and a change of ownership, from Farhad Moshiri to Dan Friedkin in 2024, after years of heavy transfer spending that produced no trophies. Through it, the fixture that still defines the club runs back across the same park where the split happened in 1892.
