Don Revie took over Leeds United in 1961 and rebuilt them from top to bottom, right down to the kit: he switched the team out of its old blue and gold and into all white, a nod to Real Madrid and the kind of glamour he wanted for a club. The Whites still play in that white now. Under Revie the team reached its peak, taking the First Division title in 1968-69 with a record haul of 67 points and 27 wins, then adding a second league crown in 1973-74. In between came the FA Cup in 1972, the League Cup in 1968 and two runs to glory in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Brian Clough's disastrous 44 days in charge, closed the era for good. Leeds reached one more European final in 1975, losing to Bayern Munich.

It came briefly in 1991-92, when Leeds won the league again, but the fall that followed was longer and harder than the rise. Financial trouble through the 1990s and early 2000s culminated in relegation from the Premier League in 2004, then a drop as far as League One in 2007, with the club in administration the same year. Three seasons passed before Leeds climbed back to the Championship, and the top flight itself stayed out of reach until the 2019-20 season, when the club won the Championship and returned to the Premier League. A second relegation and a second promotion followed, with Leeds winning the Championship again in 2024-25 to go back up. This season, 2025-26, finds them 14th in the Premier League.

Elland Road holds 37,633, and the Peacocks nickname that still turns up occasionally traces back to a pub by the ground, though it never displaced the club's real identity as the Whites, tied to the White Rose of Yorkshire on the badge. That Yorkshire identity sharpens against Manchester United, the fixture known as the Roses rivalry, carrying the old enmity between Lancashire's red rose and Yorkshire's white into a football derby. Chelsea draws similar hostility from the Elland Road end.
