Elland Road has not moved or been renamed since the football club arrived in 1919. It opened in 1897 on a plot owned by Bentley's Brewery, next to a pub called the Old Peacock. A first official football match was played there on 23 April 1898.

The stadium has been rebuilt in stages rather than once. Fire destroyed the West Stand on 18 September 1956; its £180,000 replacement went up the following year. The South Stand was doubled in height in 1974 for £500,000. The old Lowfields terrace was replaced by the two-tier East Stand between 1992 and 1994, built for £5.5 million and later extended in 2011–12 for a further £7.5 million.

Capacity has swung with those works. The record attendance, 57,892, dates from the FA Cup fifth-round replay against Sunderland on 15 March 1967.

A hybrid HT Pro pitch went in during February 2021. A redevelopment of the West and North stands, planned for 2026 to 2030 and costed at up to £200 million, is intended to bring the ground up to UEFA Category 4 and lift capacity toward 53,000.
