EFL League Two stands as the fourth tier of the English football league system. Situated below the Premier League, EFL Championship, and EFL League One, the competition operates as a league rather than a knockout tournament. The structure relies on a double round-robin format, meaning each of the 24 clubs plays every other team twice for a total of 46 matches per season.
The pathway at this level offers clear movement between divisions. The top two teams secure automatic promotion to League One. Teams finishing from third to seventh place enter a playoff series to determine the fourth promotion spot. Conversely, the two lowest-placed clubs are relegated to the National League. This structure ensures a direct competitive link to the fifth tier of English football.
The competition carries a long lineage within the sport. The Football League, which organises the tier, was founded in 1888 by William McGregor. The division itself has undergone several name changes over the decades. It operated as the Football League Third Division from 1920 and became Division Four in 1958 before adopting its current title in 2004. This continuity reflects the stability of the professional game in England.
Historical success within the division is shared among several clubs. Chesterfield and Doncaster Rovers hold the record for the most titles, each claiming four championships across the various iterations of the league. Doncaster Rovers also enter the 2026 season as the reigning champions following their victory in the 2024–25 campaign. Sponsors have played a role in the division's recent identity, with Sky Bet currently providing the naming rights, succeeding earlier partners such as Coca-Cola and Carlsberg.
The league maintains a specific scope, consisting solely of 24 professional clubs. This distinguishes it from the broader FA Cup, which allows participation from all levels of English football. The focus here remains strictly on the fourth tier of the professional pyramid.
