«The Mariners»
Grimsby sits at the mouth of the Humber, a fishing port whose docks once sent trawlers into the North Sea and the Arctic; the club took its identity from that trade, and "The Mariners" still describes the town as much as the team. The origins were plainer than the nickname suggests: a meeting at the Wellington Arms pub on Freeman Street in 1878 produced a side first called Grimsby Pelham, after Lord Yarborough, the landowner whose name carried weight locally. A year later the club became Grimsby Town, admitted to the Football League in 1892 after turning itself into a limited company.
Blundell Park has housed the club since 1898, and the ground remains its home more than a century on, holding 9,546 now within Cleethorpes rather than Grimsby itself. The black-and-white stripes date to 1925, adopted decades after the club had already built its early reputation, including a Second Division title in 1901.
Across the county line sits Lincoln City, and the meetings between the two have been called the Lincolnshire derby since 1893, the region's oldest local rivalry; Scunthorpe United shares that billing, with Hull City a quieter, more occasional friction. Grimsby's honours read as a lower-division club's record rather than a top-flight one — spells at the summit of the old Third and Fourth Divisions, a Third Division North title in 1956, and a Football League Trophy won at Wembley in 1998 — but the shape of it traces back to that room above Freeman Street, where a pub meeting settled on a name borrowed from a landowner before the town's own trade gave the club its lasting one.
