When Grimsby Town moved from Abbey Park in 1899, they took the Hazel Grove and Abbey Park stands with them, dismantled and re-erected on the new ground. Construction had begun in 1897; the first match was played on 2 September 1899, and the club has not played anywhere else since.

What has changed is the size of the crowd it can hold. On 20 February 1937, 31,651 people came for an FA Cup tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Before that came the rebuilding: floodlights in 1960 for £9,000, the Pontoon pulled down and rebuilt in 1961, Barrett's demolished in 1980 and replaced by the two-tier Findus Stand, opened in 1982 at roughly £1m. That same year, on 6 April, Grimsby beat Wimbledon 3-2 here in the Football League Group Cup final.
