Prenton Park sits on the corner of Temple Road and Prenton Road West in Birkenhead, holding 16,567 supporters, and Tranmere Rovers have not always played there. The ground took shape gradually: the club first kicked about on Steeles Field, bought the Ravenshaws land off a cricket club in 1887, and only settled into the current footprint in 1912, by which point the pitch had already carried the Prenton Park name for close to two decades.

The club itself started life in 1884 as Belmont, formed when the football sections of two cricket clubs merged, and took the Tranmere Rovers name the following year. It joined the Third Division North as a founder member in 1921 and stayed in the Football League for 94 years — a run that ended in 2015 with relegation to the National League. Rovers did not sit there long: they won the play-offs in 2018 to return to League Two, then won them again in 2019 to go straight back up to League One.

Home kit is all white, with blue trim, a switch made in 1962 to mark the club out from Everton across the water — it earned them the nickname Super Whites alongside the more common Rovers. Silverware has mostly come in the lower divisions and knockout competitions: the Welsh Cup in 1935, the Third Division North title in 1938, and the Football League Trophy in 1990, though the club also reached a Carabao Cup final in 2000, losing 1-2 to Leicester City. There was a harder chapter too — in 1987 Tranmere became the first English club to go into administration over debt.

No one is tied to Prenton Park quite like John King. He played for the club and later managed it, and it was under him that Rovers lifted the League Cup Trophy in 1990 and reached the play-offs that briefly had Birkenhead dreaming of the top flight.
