Oldham Athletic's closest brush with the FA Cup came in 1994, when a run to the semi-final ended in a replay defeat to Manchester United, a result that left an edge between the two clubs that has lasted since. It followed a League Cup final lost 0-1 to Nottingham Forest four years earlier, in 1990. Between those two games sat the club's only spell in the top flight: Oldham joined the Premier League among its founding members in 1992, on the back of the Second Division title won the previous season, and lasted two years before relegation in 1994/95.

The fall continued long after that season ended. Oldham had dropped to the third tier by 1997, and in 2022 it left the Football League altogether for the National League, the first club that had once played in the Premier League to do so. The exit lasted three years. Oldham won the National League play-offs in 2025 and returned to the Football League.

The club itself dates to 1895, when it was founded in Oldham, Greater Manchester, as Pine Villa, taking the name Oldham Athletic four years later. It has played at Boundary Park since, a ground now holding 13,186. The team turns out in blue and white and is known to its own supporters as the Latics. Locally, the closest rivalries run through Rochdale, Bolton Wanderers, Bury and Stockport County, while the fixture against Huddersfield Town carries its own name, the Roses Derby.

Roger Palmer, who played for the club through the 1980s, remains its record scorer with 157 goals.
