Prenton Park

The name arrived before the ground did. Readers of the Liverpool Echo settled on Prenton Park in 1895, when Tranmere Rovers were still at the Borough Road Enclosure; when the club moved in 1912, the name travelled with them. Tranmere have owned the place since the gates first opened on 9 March 1912.

Because the ground stayed put and the club stayed with it, floodlights were installed in 1958. A new main stand, 4,000 seats, was added in 1968. Then the Taylor Report after Hillsborough forced the issue: £3.1m in 1995 turned Prenton Park all-seater, and it has been that ever since. The Hillsborough connection is not abstract here — a memorial service for the victims was held at the ground in 1989, six years before the money was spent to make it comply.

The attendance record was set long before any of that. On 5 February 1972, 24,424 came for an FA Cup tie against Stoke City that finished 2-2.

The Women's FA Cup finals of 1991 and 1992 were played here. So was a 1998 UEFA Cup tie between Shelbourne and Rangers. In 2017 the pitch — hybrid grass, GrassMaster fibres stitched into the turf — carried Wirral Live, with Madness and Little Mix on it instead of a back four.
