Cumbrian derby weekends bring Carlisle United to mind before anything else at Barrow, a rivalry sharpened by geography as much as results, with Workington and Fleetwood Town filling in as the other fixtures supporters mark on the calendar. The club has needed that sense of contest to survive: in 1999 a financial crisis pushed Barrow out of the Football Conference altogether, and it took years in the Northern Premier League before the same organisation, founded on 16 July 1901, worked its way back up.

Holker Street has carried the club through all of it, a ground that has traded its name between sponsors over the years — SO Legal Stadium, Progression Solicitors Stadium, Furness Building Society Stadium among them — while holding to a capacity of 6,306, just over a third of that seated. The blue and white that give Barrow their nickname, the Bluebirds, have stayed constant even as kit designs have shifted, with recent seasons leaning on a white base trimmed in blue rather than the traditional blue shirt.

The 2019–20 National League title stands apart from the rest of the honours list, the most significant a non-league Barrow side has claimed, arriving two decades after the club had been cast out of the same tier of football it went on to win. An FA Trophy followed the same shape twice, in 1989–90 and again in 2009–10, two decades apart, evidence of a club that has built its identity in cup runs and non-league promotions rather than sustained Football League standing. The 2003–04 Presidents Cup final against Workington needed the away-goals rule to separate the sides after a 6–6 draw.

What Barrow have not managed is any lasting foothold higher up the pyramid — the National League title got them back into the Football League, but a major trophy or sustained run at that level still eludes them.
