Hull City draw more emotion from York supporters than the fixture list ever returns. The Minstermen call it their derby; Hull, more often than not, is looking the other way toward Leeds United. The tie carries no shared name, no trophy, just a grievance that runs one direction. The rivalry that does have a title sits closer to home, against Scarborough — the North Yorkshire derby, fought between two clubs who never needed convincing that the other mattered.

York City grew out of a 1922 restart, taking the name of an earlier club that had folded five years before, though no formal line connects the two. What the badge has carried since is less continuity than survival. In December 2002 the club went into administration, and by March 2003 it belonged to no boardroom at all — the York City Supporters' Trust bought it outright for £100,000 to clear a tax debt, an ownership model the club has kept.

The trophy cabinet holds two FA Trophy wins, over Newport County in 2012 and Macclesfield Town in 2017, either side of the 2012 Conference Premier play-off final that beat Luton Town 2-1 and put York back in the Football League. Further back, a penalty shoot-out win over Crewe Alexandra sealed promotion from the old Third Division in 1993.

Matches are played at the York Community Stadium, known commercially as the LNER Community Stadium, which holds 8,500 in red and white. Among those who wore the shirt young, Graham Potter picked up England youth caps before his career took him into management, a rare instance of a Minstermen name recognised well beyond Bootham Crescent's old terraces.
