«The Robins»
Cheltenham Town waited more than a century for a place in the Football League proper, and when it finally arrived, in 1999, it came under Steve Cotterill, who had already lifted the FA Trophy with the club a year earlier. The double stood as the club's high-water mark until 2021, when Michael Duff took charge of a Whaddon Road side that had spent its history bouncing between non-league football and League Two, and delivered the first Football League title the club had ever won, promotion out of League Two itself. Five years before that, Gary Johnson had done the reverse job in reverse order, taking Cheltenham back up from the National League with 101 points, a total that still stands as a club record.
The team plays as the Robins, in red shirts that turned to red-and-white stripes for the 1931/32 season and have stayed that way since. Whaddon Road holds 7,066, just over half of it seated, and has carried a sponsor's name, the EV Charger Points Stadium, since a 2024 deal, though supporters still call it what they always have.
Shane Duff spent ten seasons at the club as captain, from 2001 to 2011, long enough to see most of the modern honours list from the pitch. The club's record scorer, Dave Lewis, started playing for Cheltenham at 16.
The club was founded in 1887 by a local schoolteacher, Albert Close White, and has carried the name Cheltenham Town from that first season onward.
