About

The Barclays Women's Super League stands as the premier tier of women's football in England, operating under the governance of WSL Football. Established in March 2010 by the Football Association, the competition launched its inaugural campaign in 2011 before transitioning to a winter calendar in 2017 following a transitional Spring Series. This alignment with the standard autumn-to-spring schedule distinguishes the league from its previous summer format.

Currently, the top flight operates as a single division at Level 1 of the English football pyramid. For the upcoming 2026–27 season, the league has expanded to include 14 clubs. Matches follow a double round-robin structure, ensuring each side competes against every other participant twice, resulting in 26 fixtures per team. The competition became fully professional during the 2018–19 season, mandating strict licensing criteria for member clubs that include minimum player contract lengths and the establishment of youth academies.

Regulatory changes are set to take effect from the 2026–27 season regarding movement between tiers. Unlike the current arrangement which features no automatic relegation from the top flight, the new system will see one automatic promotion spot awarded to the WSL 2 champion alongside one automatic relegation place for the final team in the WSL. The remaining positions will be determined through play-offs between the respective runners-up of both divisions.

Historical dominance within the league has been secured by Chelsea Women, who hold the record for the most titles with eight championships. Their success spans multiple decades, including victories in 2015, 2017–18, and consecutive wins from 2019–20 through to 2024–25. Manchester City currently hold the title following their triumph in the 2025–26 season.

Success in the league carries significant European implications. The WSL operates distinctly from the FA Women's Cup, a knockout tournament that does not offer UEFA Women's Champions League qualification. Instead, the league structure ensures that the top three finishers earn direct entry into the continental competition.
