Josh Sheehan

Josh Sheehan started the 2026 League One play-off final for Bolton Wanderers, a 4–1 win over Stockport County that secured promotion to the Championship. It followed an earlier trophy at the club, the EFL Trophy in 2022–23, when he started the 4–0 final win over Plymouth Argyle.

His route to Bolton was not direct. Sheehan joined the Swansea City academy in 2005 and signed his first professional contract in 2012. He stayed in the squad until 2018 without making a senior league appearance. Before then he won the Professional U21 Development League 2 with Swansea's under-21s in 2014–15. His first senior football came on loan at Yeovil Town, in spells in 2015 and again from September 2015 to January 2016, and then at Newport County from August 2016.

Newport signed him permanently in January 2018, and he stayed until June 2021. He was the club's Player of the Year in 2019–20 and, in 2020–21, was named in the PFA League Two Team of the Year. Bolton signed him on a free transfer on 7 June 2021.

Sheehan was Bolton's Player of the Year and was named in both the PFA League One Team of the Year and the EFL League One Team of the Season. He has extended his contract several times, most recently in February 2026, when he agreed a deal to 2028. By early 2025 he had made more than 160 appearances for the club.

Sheehan made his Wales debut on 12 November 2020 in a 0–0 draw with the USA. He captained the side for the first time in a friendly against Gibraltar in June 2024. He has 19 caps and has not yet scored for his country.
