Matt Doherty

Doherty's route into English football began with a £75,000 move from Bohemians to Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2010. Loan spells at Hibernian and Bury gave him first-team football away from Wolves, and he was part of the side that won League One in 2013–14 before establishing himself as a regular at Molineux. His breakthrough season came in 2015–16, when he was named the club's Player of the Year, and he went on to win the Championship with Wolves in 2017–18 as the club returned to the Premier League. He picked up the PFA Fans' Premier League Player of the Month award in September 2018. Across his first spell at Wolves he made 302 appearances.

A £13.4 million transfer took him to Tottenham Hotspur in August 2020, where he reached the EFL Cup final in his first season. His contract was terminated in January 2023, clearing the way for a free transfer to Atlético Madrid. That move yielded only two appearances. Wolves brought him back on a free transfer in July 2023, and his second spell added a further 71 league appearances.

Doherty made his Republic of Ireland debut in March 2018 and has gone on to earn 53 caps, scoring three goals. He was included in Ireland's squads for the Euro 2020 finals and the 2022 World Cup, having missed out on selection for the 2016 Euros and the 2018 World Cup.
