About the player
Satoshi Tanaka made his senior international debut for Japan on 12 July 2025, coming off the bench against China at the EAFF E-1 Football Championship and setting up a goal in a 2-0 win. Japan went on to win that tournament, and Tanaka has since been named in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His path to that point ran through several clubs. Tanaka joined Shonan Bellmare's youth setup in 2018 and turned professional there in July 2020, going on to make 114 league appearances and score seven goals for the club. A loan spell took him to Belgian side Kortrijk from August 2022, where he played 15 league matches before returning to Shonan in June 2023.
At the end of 2024 he moved on permanently, joining Sanfrecce Hiroshima, where he made 28 league appearances and scored once during the 2025 season. A year later, at the end of December 2025, Tanaka signed for Fortuna Düsseldorf on a contract running to 2030, going on to make 13 league appearances for the club.
A left-footed defensive midfielder, Tanaka has continued to build his career in Europe after his move from Japan.
