Tony Strata

Tony Strata's route to Guimarães started with a bankruptcy rather than a fee. Ajaccio, the club that had raised him from academy level to nearly fifty first-team appearances across Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, was liquidated by the Commercial Court of Ajaccio, and within a week Strata had signed for the Portuguese side as a free agent on a four-year deal running to 2029.

Born in Marseille to a Corsican father and a Romanian mother from Sălaj, Strata chose to represent Romania rather than France. His football education came through a string of local clubs — Air Bel, Burel and Istres — before Ajaccio brought him into their academy in 2021. He worked through the reserve side, scoring once in sixteen appearances, before a first-team debut in 2023 that opened the door to regular football in the professional ranks.

At youth international level he was capped repeatedly for Romania's under-20 side, scoring twice, and became a fixture for the under-21s. That progression was rewarded with a senior call-up, and he made his debut for Romania's full national team as a substitute in a friendly against Wales.

The move to Guimarães now places him in a new league and a new football culture, arriving not through a transfer negotiated between clubs but through the abrupt collapse of the one that developed him — a circumstance that shaped the timing of his career.
