It began in April 1971 as Lloyds Sports, a Sunday league side in the City of Portsmouth Sunday League, then became Colourvision Rangers, then Wicor Mill. The name AFC Portchester only arrived in 2000, after a merger with a junior club, and a second merger in 2002–03, with Castle Royals, gave the side both its youth setup and its nickname, The Royals.

The club plays at Wicor Recreation Ground, capacity around 1,500, and its meetings with Fareham Town are known locally as the "El Creekio" derby. In 2011 it received the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

That changed across 2024 and 2025. Brett Pitman , who joined in 2022 after a career in the Football League, scored more than 50 goals in a single season for the club.
