Al Shorta SC

Douglas Aziz spent more than a decade in Al-Shorta's colours, from 1964 to 1975, before returning to the touchline and taking the club to its first league title in 1979–80. That championship, in a competition then still finding its shape, marked the start of something the club would return to again and again.

The football grew out of a police sports section set up in Baghdad in 1932 by Mudhafar Ahmed, who ran the city's police schools; it took until 1974 for the club to stand as an independent body under its own name, and 1978 to be registered with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. During the Iran-Iraq War it played a season as Qiwa Al-Amn Al-Dakhili, the Internal Security Forces, before reverting to Al-Shorta. After 2003, former goalkeeper Raad Hammoudi took over as president and pulled it back from bankruptcy.

Domestic honours accumulated steadily but the FA Cup held out until 2023–24, when Al-Shorta finally won it and completed a double with the league title.

The club plays out of a rebuilt Al-Shorta Stadium, opened in November 2025 on the site of the ground it had used since 1990, with room for 10,089.
