In 1911, a Mohun Bagan side that played much of the final barefoot beat the East Yorkshire Regiment to lift the IFA Shield — the first time an Indian club had beaten a British team in a major tournament on home soil.
The trophy cabinet built up from there rather than around that one afternoon: the Calcutta Football League alone has been won 30 times, the IFA Shield 23.
The club's more recent history has been about renegotiating its own name. A 2020 merger with the Indian Super League franchise ATK brought a title that season and a foothold in the national league, but supporters never took to the corporate prefix, and protests pushed the club to drop it in 2023 in favour of Mohun Bagan Super Giant, now owned by the RPSG Group.
Home games are played at the Salt Lake Stadium, which holds around 68,000, though nothing in Kolkata draws like the derby against East Bengal — the Boro Match, one of the oldest rivalries in world football.
The club itself traces to 15 August 1889, when Mohun Bagan Athletic Club was formed in Kolkata, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Asia.
